Trip description
Our Best of Japan itinerary makes maximum use of the efficient and speedy bullet train, leaving you with plenty of time to not only marvel at Japan’s iconic temples and shrines, but also to explore its lanes, discover its natural wonders and mix on an intimate level. with the locals.
Your journey will begin in Tokyo, world famous for its futuristic architecture and energetic atmosphere illuminated by a neon glow. However, like many Japanese cities, Tokyo is more than meets the eye: Beneath the sleek and modern surface lies a city of tradition with many surprising opportunities for calm and serenity.
In ancient Japan, the Tokaido Highway connected the Shogun’s power base in Edo (present-day Tokyo) with the former capital of Kyoto, a distance of about 500 km. Your next destination, Hakone, was once a post town on this route and has since become popular for its proximity to Tokyo and its mix of outdoor activities, culture and relaxation. When the skies are clear, the views of Mount Fuji across Lake Ashi are truly spectacular.
From Hakone, you’ll take the bullet train to Kyoto, where gardens, temples and shrines are hidden around every corner. Having served as the capital of Japan for over a millennium, Kyoto provides a fascinating insight into the origins of Japanese culture and lives up to its nickname “The City of Ten Thousand Shrines.” After this, you will visit the atmosphere of Hiroshima, where the Peace Park offers a sobering look at the more recent history of Japan.
Next, spend a night in a capsule hotel in Osaka’s lively entertainment district. Capsule hotels were originally designed to cater to salaried Japanese who had missed the last train home after a night of drinking, but are now popular for their convenience and value. This stay is sure to provide an interesting counterpoint to your next hotel: an authentic family-run minshuku inn in the alpine village of Takayama!
