Leave the bright lights and fast life behind and immerse yourself in the more traditional and relaxed side of Japan. This trip will show you a very different Japan, taking you away from the usual tourist spots, while also including the must-see cities of Tokyo and Kyoto.
8 Destinations – 7 Days Tour
Trip description
After three nights in Asakusa, Tokyo’s most traditional district, you’ll swap skyscrapers for mountains and escape the crowds of the city in search of villages and country inns.
Here, among the World Heritage sites, mountain landscapes and popular museums, you will get to know a more traditional and calm side of Japan. Along the way, you will visit meticulously designed gardens, explore samurai residences, and have the opportunity to shop for handicrafts at local markets.
In the rural village of Shirakawa-go, you will visit thatched-roof farms in the depths of the countryside, while in Tsumago you will have the opportunity to explore an excellently preserved post town on the old Nakasendo Highway.
Both rural destinations have fantastic walking opportunities and small Japanese-style inns with a genuine welcome and hearty home cooking.
After traveling through the stunning countryside and regional cities, you will find yourself in the ancient capital of Kyoto, a city full of culture, history, and art. This is the perfect opportunity to experience the religious and cultural traditions of this fascinating country.
Along the way you will visit Matsumoto, where one of the best existing castles in Japan is an impressive sight, and Kanazawa, where the impressive Kenrokuen is ranked among the top three gardens in Japan.
The morning market in the alpine town of Takayama, meanwhile, will give you a chance to see a bit of small town life and learn about the area’s famous spring and fall festivals.
Your three nights in Kyoto will give you the opportunity to take a day trip at no additional cost, using your included Japan Rail Pass. Possible destinations include Hiroshima, Himeji, and Kobe.
