Trip description
Take the last trip to Japan during cherry blossom season, see the blue-eyed flowers and see the elegant Aoi Festival.
If you have missed the beautiful cherry blossoms in March and April, you can still see them in May. Cherry blossoms bloom in Hokkaido about a month after the island of Honshu, between the end of April and the beginning of May. This 21-day Grand Tour of Japan is the longest and most comprehensive group tour of Japan you’ll find. By visiting the four main islands of Japan, travelers can enjoy culture, architecture, nature, rural villages, historical cities, modern city attractions, and even a famous Japan festival.
Starting on the northern island of Hokkaido, we will first visit Otaru for its nostalgic canal area and its glass blowing shops. Continue to Sapporo to see the city’s monuments and entertainment district. You will also learn about the indigenous peoples of Japan at Ainu Village and visit the smoky Noboribetsu Valley. Then, head to Lake Toya and Onuma Park for a scenic interlude. Experience one of Japan’s top three night views from Mount Hakodate.
Take an underwater train tunnel to Aomori, where you will visit the Nebuta Warasse, a colorful museum dedicated to the Nebuta Festival. Visit Lake Towada and enjoy a nature walk along the Oirase Gorge stream. Afterward, head to Morioka Handi-Works Square and Chusonji Temple for a cultural experience. Then, take a sightseeing cruise around Matsushima, a picturesque bay famous for being one of the three most scenic sights in Japan. End your day in a traditional Japanese-style hotel with a relaxing onsen (hot spring) bath and a delicious kaiseki dinner.
Visit the luxurious Toshogu Shrine, see one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Japan, and stroll along Lake Chuzenji. Head to the Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki to see 4.5 million blue-eyed flowers bloom on its hills.
Continue your trip to one of the busiest cities in the world, Tokyo, where our guides and drivers will accompany you to the main attractions. Visit Tokyo’s historical landmarks, trendy neighborhoods, various shopping districts, and even learn how to make your own sushi from a professional sushi chef. Proceed to Mt. Fuji and enjoy the natural scenery of Hakone and Owakudani by cable car. Experience a high-speed Shinkansen bullet train ride before visiting the beautiful Hikone Castle and the uniquely designed Miho Museum.
Experience the Aoi Festival in Kyoto, a well-preserved and elegant procession of 500 people dressed in aristocratic-style clothing. Spend two more days in the historic city of Kyoto, where you will have exclusive access to the best gardens, temples, and specialty shops in the city. Our tour group will also have the opportunity to experience a traditional green tea ceremony, meet an apprentice geisha (maiko), and enjoy an elegant kimono fashion show. Continue to Himeji Castle, an original castle and a world heritage site. Then, head to the beautiful canal city of Kurashiki and the Ohara Museum of Art.
Cross the Seto Ohashi Bridge to Shikoku Island, visit the Shikoku Mura Village Open Air Museum, and take a walk through the Japanese landscape masterpiece of Ritsurin Park. Afterward, take a short ferry ride to scenic Miyajima Island, home to the famous vermilion torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine.
Go back in time and visit the Samurai districts of Kitsuki, discover the seething “hells” of Jigoku hot springs, and meet some of Japan’s 1,500 wild monkeys at Mount Takasaki Monkey Park. Explore the legendary city of Takachiho and experience a special Yokagura dance performance. In Nagasaki, visit the Nagasaki and Dejima Peace Park, an area with over 400 years of history in Dutch trade.
