A modern ryokan on a farm where you can try sushi making, chopstick carving and canoeing on Lake Hokuryuko.
You will be forgiven for never having heard of Togarinozawa Onsen. It is a small city in Nagano prefecture, home to a remote farmland ryokan. The building is quite modern from the outside, but has lovely hot spring baths and the area is surrounded by farmland and countryside that you can explore while staying here.
A typical farm program includes helping make bamboo leaf sushi for lunch, making traditional chopsticks, and helping with farm chores such as attending the rice fields and picking fruit. In the afternoon, the ryokan owners will canoe you across Lake Hokuryuko, a great way to soak up the scenery.
