Mount Asahidake is the highest point on the island of Hokkaido and is located in Japan’s largest national park, Daisetsuzan.
The best way to explore the Asahidake region is on foot, and there are many long and difficult trails through Daisetsuzan National Park. Hiking is best from the end of June to the end of September. The entire Daisetsuzan mountain range is volcanic in origin, and hiking trails pass hot spring ponds and sulfurous springs.
Mount Asahidake is the highest peak in Hokkaido at 2,290 meters. It is possible to take a cable car part of the mountain and from there it is a two-hour hike to the top. This last section is above the tree line, very exposed to the elements; Make sure you are prepared! Asahidake is the first place in Japan to see spectacular fall colors every year (around mid-September) and also the first place where snow falls (in October).
