Test your luck in a temple by drawing an omikuji fortune token.
Most temples and shrines offer omikuji – delicate papers that predict your fate. For a small fee, you can draw a receipt containing predictions ranging from daikichi to daikyo (great fortune to very bad luck). If you tie your paper around a tree on the temple grounds, good fortune will come true or bad fortune will be avoided. Some of the larger temples, like Kyoto’s Kinkaku-ji (Golden Temple), offer omikuji in English.
Another way to get good fortune on a shrine visit is to write your wishes on a wooden ema plate and leave them at the shrine to wait for them to come true. Most people want good health, business, test, or love results.
