Japan’s Loch Ness Monster? See if you can see the illusory Iriomote wildcat!
As you explore Iriomote Island, be sure to keep an eye on the yamaneko, an elusive wildcat that was discovered in 1965 and can only be found on Iriomote. Related to the leopard, it is only the size of a domesticated cat and a nocturnal animal, most active around twilight. Cats are terrestrial, but they can climb trees and also swim. During the day they sleep in caves or tree holes. Sadly, the yamaneko is an endangered species and it is believed that there are only 100 cats left on the island. So it is highly unlikely that you will see one, but please let us know if you do.
