Spend a fun morning or afternoon learning how to dye material in the traditional Japanese style at Yamamoto Roketsu Dyeing Studio in Kyoto.
Roketsu is a traditional fabric dyeing method unique to Kyoto. Using ancient techniques, wax is applied to the fabric that blocks the indigo dyes to form elaborate and intricate designs of a beautiful shade of blue.
Only One is delighted to offer a roketsu dyeing experience in the only studio in Japan where you can experience the entire process from start to finish. Under the instruction of trades people with over 50 years of experience, you don’t have to be an artist to create a good memory. Choose to create a bandana, fabric, t-shirt or noren (Japanese curtains) and then select a design from hundreds of different templates or design your own.
The first step is to apply hot wax to the fabric with a brush to trace through the stencil. When this has cooled down, it’s time to dye the fabric. You will be given protective clothing to remove the piece in a tub of natural indigo dye. The final stage is ironing the fabric and stamping the design (who knew you would iron on vacation?)
