A wooden bathhouse from the Meiji Period where the Imperial Family decides to bathe.
Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama is one of the oldest hot spring onsen complexes in Japan, dating back more than 1,000 years. The main wooden bathhouse was built in 1884 and to this day one bath is reserved especially for the Imperial Family. The bathhouse is a maze of narrow staircases, wooden passageways, and always-busy baths with onsen bathers. It is said to have been the inspiration for Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli animation Spirited Away.
