The city of Saga is the capital of the homonymous prefecture of Saga, located northeast of Kyushu Island. It reached its peak specifically during the Edo period (1603-1867) thanks to the influence of the Nabeshima clan. Apart from its castle, there are other buildings that testify to its lavish past, mainly certain samurai residences and merchant houses or even some traditional warehouses in the purest kurazukuri style. The city and its surroundings offer a particularly beautiful natural landscape, quality agricultural products (mainly rice and oranges), hot springs and an art of ceramics that enjoy an excellent reputation throughout the world.
Saga Castle is the largest wooden construction restoration project in Japan. Although most of the buildings were destroyed during the Saga insurrection of 1874, the Sachino-mon gate and some stone walls date from the time the building was constructed. The museum’s permanent exhibition will allow you to understand the crucial role that the city of Saga played in the modernization process of the country. (10 min by bus from Saga station).
In this large park a village from the Yayoi period (from the 3rd century AD to the 3rd century AD) has been reproduced on the basis of the existing ruins with their circular moats, watchtowers and other constructions. Archaeological excavations continue throughout the park.
