Shodo Island is the second largest island in the Inland Sea with 170 km2 and enjoys a temperate climate, similar to the Mediterranean, which allowed it to specialize in the cultivation of olive trees. Tonosho, accessible by boat from Osaka, Takamatsu, and Okayama, is the entry point to the island. The island depends on the Kagawa Prefecture.
On the eastern coast of the island, we find some rocks carved by erosion that have fantastic shapes. The gorges are most beautiful in autumn when the leaves are stained red and gold, or in spring when the azaleas are in bloom. A cable car links the cliffs and offers impressive views to the visitor.
Along the coast facing the Inland Sea is a small town from the 1920s-1930s. In fact, there is the story of a successful movie, “24 ojos”. Currently, it has been transformed into a park. A statue of the characters from the film was erected in Tonosho Harbor.
In 1908, various olive plantation trials were conducted in Japan. Only those from Shodo Island survived. Today there are 2,000 trees that flourish here.
