Spectacular hikes and hikes in the Kamikochi region of Chubu-Sangaku National Park.
High in the Japanese Alps is Kamikochi, a beautiful area of the national park. Private cars are prohibited in the national park, so the bus is the only means of transportation. Due to heavy snowfall in winter, Kamikochi buses and hotels only run from April to November.
Kamikochi is a 15 km plateau along the Azusa River, 1,500 meters above sea level. It is a fantastic area for hiking with easy, flat trails along the valley floor from Taisho Pond to Myojin Bridge. However, in July and August, more experienced hikers can tackle one of the mountain peaks that surround Kamikochi: Nishihotakadake (2,909 m), Okuhotakadake (3,190 m), Maehotakadake (3,090 m) and the active Yakedake volcano (2,455 m). ).
When to go: Kamikochi is closed due to heavy snowfall in winter, so it is only accessible from May to the end of October. The national park is absolutely spectacular in mid-October when the fall leaves turn bright red.
