Athletics at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be held at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium from July 30 to August 8, 2021.
In total, 48 different events will be held, 24 male, 23 female and one mixed. The competition program was modified in relation to the previous edition, with the addition of the mixed 4 × 400 m relay event.
The competition calendar was presented on April 16, 2019, more than a year before the start of the competition. According to the IAAF, these objectives were sought in its preparation: 3
Include endings in the morning sessions, in order to improve the global audience.
Allow athletes to double some common distances (100m – 200m, 200m – 400m, 800m – 1500m, 1500m – 5000m, 5000m – 10,000m).
Avoid the overlap of two road events on the same day, starting as early as possible to avoid extreme heat.
Start the competition with a final (the men’s 20 km walk) in which local athletes could play a prominent role.
Make the decathlon and heptathlon contested at the same time.
Allow the 400 m athletes to participate without problems in the different 4 × 400 m events, in addition to the individual.
